Welcome to Renaissance Rare Poultry! We are a small family farm located in Rockville, Virginia (approximately 30 minutes west of Richmond). We specialize in imported English Orpingtons in a wide variety of colors.
Why English Orpingtons?
We have fallen in love with English Orpingtons. They are large, very fluffy, and generally docile. They are an excellent dual purpose breed and are available in a beautiful variety of colors. Orpington hens do occasionally go broody.
Our Philosophy
To begin our Orpington breeding program we first sought to purchase stock from the best breeders and in most cases we purchased directly from the farms that originally imported the English Orpingtons to the United States. We believe that the best way to achieve early success with a breeding program is to start with the highest quality stock available. We breed with the goal of producing Orpingtons that meet the English standard of perfection. Our Orpingtons come from 100% imported lines. We believe that successful breeding is a combination of art and science. We are constantly learning more about poultry genetics and breeding. Each year we grow out some chicks from our own breeding pens to evaluate our progress and use some of the best in our breeding program the following year in order to continue our work toward achieving the standard of perfection. The remaining chicks we hatch are offered for sale so that other breeders and Orpington lovers can enjoy these beautiful varieties. We try to keep our prices at or below the market prices so that more people can enjoy these beautiful birds. As most of the English Orpingtons we raise are very recent imports to the United States, we have just begun our work with them. The breeders we purchased our stock from have done an excellent job producing quality Orpingtons and we will continue their hard work as we strive to select the best quality stock to breed.
Origins of Our Farm Name
The story behind our farm name is twofold. First, our Orpingtons represent a beautiful kaleidoscope of colors, worthy of a Renaissance painting! (Similar to the striking colors in the sunset picture of our farm featured at the top of this page.) Second, we are thrilled that backyard chicken keeping and preservation of rare breeds of poultry is experiencing a huge renaissance of its own. We want to see these beautiful and varied breeds and colors of poultry thrive long into the future.
